Officials Increase Security In Wake Of School Assaults

Posted: Updated:

Five students from one Philadelphia high school have been assaulted on their way home from school this week alone. Now school officials have stepped up their security plans.

Despite increased police patrols, students are scared and their parents are petrified that their child could be the next victim.

John McConnell, the president of Cristo Rey High School, a private, independent catholic school in the Logan section of the city says seven students have been assaulted and or robbed on their way home from school this month.

"One of our freshman,14-years-old was assaulted beat up a little he had a bloody nose," McConnell said.

"We're telling kids to walk together in packs , see here they're going to the subway in packs."

But even walking with a large group to the Broad Street subway stop sophomore Kamonte Brown says she was verbally threatened and harassed just yesterday by boys who appeared to be 16 or 17 years old.

"One boy told me he was gonna shoot me," Brown said. "He told me I was in his hood and we come up here to go to school every day and he was gonna wait for us after-school."

Karen Kiah, Brown's mother, said from the time her daughter leaves to the time she gets home I worry.

School officials say a couple students have had their cell phones and bags stolen. The 35th police district is involved in the case. Last night they arrested two people involved in this.

But officials think there are more suspects out there and hope police continue to beef up patrols in the meantime students have been warned to stay alert - stick together and hide valuables.

Parents remain nervous.

"I don't want nobody to hurt my daughter," Kiah said.

"We're on the news…and cops are down there every day…it's like drawing negative attention to our school when we're trying to do something positive," Brown said.
