Shutdown could halt school lunch programs

(WJBK) -

Thousands of state employees whose jobs are federally funded could be temporarily laid off, and federal assistance and school lunch programs could be cut as early as Monday if the government shutdown continues.

"In a country like ours, food should not be a question. Everybody should have access to food," Carol Goss says. She is the president of the Skillman Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for kids in Detroit.

"Children will really suffer if the government shutdown continues. Those are federal dollars that fund school lunches. If that goes away these children will not get - for some of them - the only meal they would have during the day," Goss points out.

However, a spokeswoman for Detroit Public Schools says students will still get fed. The statement says: "We will continue our nutrition operations and feeding our students using our food service surplus revenues."

But when those funds run out, then what?

"This is a time when adults are making decisions that really adversely affect our children and we should say 'You cant do that.'" Goss says.

It's not just school lunches hanging in the balance. 40 percent of the states budget is federally funded, meaning programs like unemployment compensation, cash assistance for needy families and WIC could also be on the line. State money for WIC runs out November 1.
