Home invasions target elderly in Detroit neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

R.B. Williams just celebrated his 100th birthday in a home he's lived in for 65 years. But now, he's become the victim of a home invasion.

Detroit Police Officer Jayme McCree got the call while he was in court Thursday morning: two men ransacked his grandfather's west-side home.

"He's 100 years old.I'm thinking the worse," McCree recalls.

Police found his Williams on the floor. The fall left Williams with a broken hip. Doctors say he'll need surgery.

"As soon as he opened the big door they came in, and pushed him with such force he fell down," McCree explains to Fox 2's Alexis Wiley.

The thieves took everything they could.

But this wasn't the only home invasion in this neighborhood Thursday morning. Two men broke into an 88-year-old woman's home just two streets away from Williams' home. Both crimes happened just two hours apart. They broke in through the woman's bedroom window. Bernadette Gamble walked in as they were standing over her mother's bed.

"They told me if I screamed they was gonna kill me," Gamble says. "I told them to take whatever they wanted to take, just don't take my life."

Gamble says they roughed her up but didn't seriously hurt her or her elderly mother. Based on the description police do not believe the crimes are connected, but investigators are following every clue and they are determined to track these men down before they hurt anyone else.
