A look inside some of NYC's most interesting places

Posted: Updated:

openhousenewyork's 11th annual OHNY Weekend kicked off Friday. openhousenewyork is a nonprofit that gives you access to some of the city's most exclusive locations from majestic historic homes to the closed TWA Flight Center.

From over-the-top lofts to the Brooklyn Army Terminal, openhousenewyork wants to hook you up with hundreds of the most exclusive and elusive sites in New York.

"The goal is and purpose is simple, it's to open up buildings and spaces all over New York City and the five boroughs to give people an opportunity to get inside, look around," Gregory Wessner said.

The organization started these weekends in 2003 and is based on a similar event that takes place in London. Wessner said more sites are added annually.

"Each year we sit down and look at a list of sites that had participated in the past," he said. "New buildings that have recently opened, things that are culturally significant."

All of the sites are free except the ones you have to make a reservation for. Those cost about $5.

Still, Wessner said the variety of sites make it well worth it.

"Sites range from the large iconic historic places like the TWA Flight Center, which is one of those buildings when you get inside far exceeds expectations, pictures don't do it justice, to small outdoor out of the way sites like a museum in Courtland Alley downtown that is in a former freight elevator," Wessner said.

openhousenewyork also provides free access to performances and family activities.
