Woman Says Transport Drivers Put Her Life In Danger

Posted: Updated:

If anyone knows the dangers of using a hand-held cell phone while cruising around busy streets and highways, you'd think it would be a medical transport driver, but a frightened passenger tells FOX 29 it happened repeatedly.

A Delaware woman says districted drivers put her safety at risk by talking on their cell phones while taking her to medical appointments.

Surgery to remove brain tumors has left Karen, she asked us not to reveal her full identity, with almost no long-distance vision.

"I can't drive at all now," Karen told FOX 29's Bruce Gordon. "No, I can't."

As a Medicaid patient, Karen is assigned several non-emergency medical transport companies to take her to and from her doctor's appointments throughout northern Delaware.

"Basically, you're putting your life in their hands and you're hoping for the best," Karen said,

Most of the services work just fine, then there's Mondlize.

Back in late July and throughout August, Karen says she secretly videotaped several of her trips with Mondlize throughout New Castle County.

At one point, the camera pans over to the rear passenger window so you can see the company name.

"The speed limit on 495 is 65 mph. You can look over and see them doing 75, 85 and they're on the phone. There's one instance of the driver picking up paper-- he's reading while he's driving," Karen said.

Karen says she's complained to the drivers, but they told her that she was in good hands.

She tells us she still uses medical transport services, but has not used Mondlize since shooting the last of these videos.

"I didn't go through and survive all these medical procedures, just to be killed in a car wreck," Karen said.

The brain tumor survivor said her complaints to Mondlize have gotten her nowhere, so we paid a visit to the company's Newark, Delaware office. They were not interested in talking.
