Teen Punished For Being Designated Driver

A Massachusetts student is in the middle of controversy after doing a good dead for a friend.

17-year old Erin Cox says she got a call from a friend that she needed a ride home from a party.

The friend had been allegedly drinking, but police showed up at the party, and Cox also got in trouble.

An officer at the scene vouched for student's sobriety, but the school demoted Cox from captain of her volleyball team, and she was also suspended for five games.

Erin's mother Eleanor is worried about her daughter.

"She didn't do anything wrong," Eleanor said.

"If a kid asks for help from a friend you don't want that kid to say I'm sorry I can't help you I might end up in trouble at school," Erin's attorney, Wendy Murphy, said. "The school sent a lawyer there to defend the school and that lawyer said out loud to the judge and it was a lie that Erin was arrested."

"She did what she thought was right and I'm very proud of her for that," Eleanor said.

In a statement, Murphy said, "With near daily stories of high school students dying in alcohol-fueled car accidents, we should be glad that young people like Erin Cox are willing to help friends who might not otherwise get home safely. By punishing Erin Cox, the North Andover School District sends a contrary and very dangerous message – that young people are better off not letting their friends drive drunk. We will soon file formal legal action against the school district in the hope that officials there will think twice before imposing sanctions on any student whose only offense involves trying to prevent yet another drunk-driving tragedy."
