Girl Saves Classmate's Life Through Heimlich

Posted: Updated:

An 11-year-old girl from Oklahoma is being called a hero. She saved one of her classmate's lives by performing the Heimlich Maneuver.

Maeli Powell was eating lunch in the school cafeteria, when her classmate started to choke. Maeli sprang into action, putting her arms around the classmate and pulled back on the student's stomach, saving her life.

"Her face was turning red and she couldn't breathe," she recalled. "I forced air up there and it kinda forced the corn dog bite go on the tray."

Her mother is especially proud, because Maeli has Asperger's Syndrome, and never showed any interest in playing with the other children. She says that this is a breakthrough.

Maeli learned the Heimlich years ago at school and clearly remembered.
