Police: Tiny cameras hidden on some LIRR ticket machines

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

MTA police are warning Long Island Rail Road commuters to check their credit and bank accounts after discovering tiny cameras installed on several ticket vending machines in Queens and Nassau County.

The cameras were installed on seven machines at four stations: Bayside and Great Neck on the Port Washington Branch, Merillon Avenue on the Huntington/Port Jefferson Branch, and Greenvale on the Oyster Bay Branch, police said.

The tiny cameras were found on the underside of black metal strips placed across the tops of the machines with an adhesive, according to MTA Police Chief Michael Coan. The strips blended perfectly and looked like they were part of the machine, he said.

Coan urged riders to make sure no one has tried using their bank or credit card accounts.

MTA detectives and LIRR workers are checking machines at all LIRR stations to see if any more cameras turn up.

If you have any information about this sophisticated scheme, call the MTA Police Department at 718-361-2247.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
