Parent Asks School To Change Mascot Name

Posted: Updated:

"Change the name of our mascot" is what's being asked of a school in Bucks County. Omari Fleming reports on why it's so controversial.

Neshaminy High School football players can deliver some tough blows but for Donna Boyle nothing's more painful than seeing their team name "The Redskins" plastered on school buildings.

She said it put a knot in her stomach when she walked through the building at back to school night.

From her striking features she got from her Cherokee father, there's no mistaking Boyle's Native American ancestry.

That's why the Neshaminy High School mom filed a complaint with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission alleging "The Redskins" name is a form of harassment offensive to Native Americans and her 13-year-old son who attends Neshaminy High.

School Board President Ritchie Webb presided over this week's meeting where board members unanimously voted to respond to Boyle's complaint. They're asking the commission to dismiss it.

It's the board's policy to provide learning environment free from any and all forms of racism discrimination and harassment verbal or visual they're not upholding the policy.

They don't believe the term is a form of harassment especially since the football teams helmets just read 'Skins' and the board say parents have given them overwhelming support.

"As someone who's got native black foot in our family. I've always thought redskins was prideful thing," Danielle Foster, a parent said.

The commission says it could take a year or more to decide if the issue isn't settled first. They could decide there's probable cause for change or no cause at all once their investigation is complete.
