Family of Kira Steger wish 'pura vida' at funeral

WAUSAU, Wis. (KMSP) -

The funeral for Kira Steger was finally held on Saturday at St. Mark's Parish in Rothschild, Wis., a village near Wausau.

"Kira had this ability to make you feel more loved, respected & valuable in one minute than anyone could ever make me feel in my entire life," her sister Felicia Krejci said.

Steger's husband, Jeffery Trevino, was convicted of second-degree murder on Oct. 2. Prosecutors told jurors that Steger was killed by Trevino because she was having an affair and was planning to divorce him.

"Now she's home. It may sound silly, but I can protect her now. I can know where she is all the time," Krejci said.

Steger's body was recovered from the Mississippi River in May, and was last seen alive in late February at Mall of America. Steger "left this world and went to heaven before her time on February 21, 2013," her obituary in the Wausau Daily Herald details.

The obituary also cites the phrase "pura vida" as the essence of Steger, a Costa Rican colloquialism that literally translates to "pure life," but more closely means "full life," meaning no matter how much or how little you have, life is short, so you must live it to the fullest.

"She smiled all the time. You could never, ever see a frown on Kira's face. The smile is like the trademark," Krejci said.
