Ocean Co. Prosecutor's Office: No End To Cyber Crook Scams

Posted: Updated:
OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. -

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced today that a revised version of the recently proliferating virus is now attacking home computers.

The revised version of what tech experts call Ransomware is the "Crytolocker." This version will now encrypt and delete files on the user's computer.

According to authorities, the virus comes as an attachment to emails that appear to be from reputable sources like Hewlett Packard or Xerox. Once the computer gets infected, the virus will demand money from users to decrypt their files. A few users report that they've had their files unencrypted if they pay the ransom, but most lose their files forever (and any money that they pay).

Detectives from the Ocean County High Tech Crime Unit stress that since cyber crooks' emails are originating from forged email accounts, home computer owners can only protect themselves by checking the senders of the e-mails and verifying the legitimacy of the sender. Other simple ways to ward off these attacks are to not to visit un-trusted websites or follow links provided by unknown or un-trusted sources; be cautious when clicking on links in emails coming from trusted sources; insure anti-virus is installed on your home computer.

Those seeking additional information can contact the Ocean County High Tech Crime Unit at 732-929-2027.
