College Lifts Lockdown After Tavern Armed Robbery Search

Posted: Updated:
BLUE BELL, Pa. -

A manhunt for two armed robbers in Montgomery County led to a lockdown Monday morning that has now been lifted at a local community college.

This all happened as police investigated a robbery that occurred at the Whitpain Tavern overnight in Blue Bell.

The chase caused Montgomery County Community College to go on lockdown, and it remained that way throughout the morning.

Police said the armed robbery call came in at 1:30 a.m. The two guys wearing ski masks robbed the tavern of a safe and possibly other items before stealing a red Ford Mustang to make their getaway.

Police chased the robbers, throwing "stop strips" into road to disable the car, which then crashed down an embankment on Montgomery County Community College's campus just off DeKalb Pike. That's when the robbers made a run for it.

The car was towed away around 6 a.m.

Police from 10 different departments, a SWAT team and K-9 units spent the morning searching the campus and a housing development across the street. Reporters were told that the perimeter was secured, and the robbers were still believed to be in the area.

About 13,000 students attend Montgomery County Community College, although none live on campus. Classes usually begin at 8 a.m. But this morning MCCC announced that its Central Campus in Blue Bell would open at 10 a.m. Monday as "a result of police activity near campus." Then, officials pushed back the opening.

"After thorough search, police have cleared MCCC's Blue Bell Campus to reopen," the college tweeted. "Classes will resume at noon."

FOX 29's Dawn Timmeney reported live from near the campus Monday morning and has more details in her video reports.
