Mother Defends Son's Controversial Costume

Posted: Updated:

Halloween is over, but the controversy surrounding one child's costume remains.

Neighbors were outraged to see the seven-year-old dressed up as a member of the Ku Klux Klan. However, his family says that the costume is seen as a family tradition.

"My brother has when he was in Kindergarten and when he was thirteen," mother Jessica Black said.

The child, Jackson Black, said that he wanted to wear the costume after seeing it in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes.

"Cause it was cool. The hat part," said Jackson Black.

His mom, Jessica Black, says that there is nothing wrong with the costume, or the KKK, which still has a strong presence in their hometown of Craigsville, Virginia.

"I did tell him that, you know, if you do it, you know, there's going to be people talking about you, there's going to be people saying bad things about you when you do wear it," she recalled.

Some neighbors are definitely shocked.

"I just think it's really sad … kid is being taught that, that young. Because they don't know any better. You don't hear that much about it nowadays," said Wendi Sprouse.

"It's supposed to be white with white, black with black, man with woman and all of that. That's what the KKK stands for. The KKK every year, raises money to donate to the St. Jude's," argued Jessica Black.

When asked if he would still wear the costume, knowing that it upsets people, Jackson responded with a resounding, "Yes."

Sprouse does not think the costume is acceptable. "It's not okay, you're offending a lot of people by one little action."

Jackson says that she has received several threats on Facebook after posting a photo of her son wearing the costume. In the comment section on various social media outlets, the words are no kinder.
