I-90 eastbound traffic lanes to reopen in northwest suburbs

HAMPSHIRE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

More eastbound lanes are scheduled to open on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) next week in northwest suburbs.

By 5 a.m. on Nov. 5, eastbound traffic on the tollway near the U.S. Route 20 interchange near Hampshire will shift from the westbound side of the road onto new pavement on the eastbound side with two lanes and a full right shoulder, according to a statement from the Illinois Tollway Authority.

Further northwest, near Belvidere, similar traffic shifts are scheduled to be completed before the morning rush hour on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 on a 2-mile section of the tollway, between Mill Road and the Union Pacific Railroad overpass, and on a 3-mile section of the tollway, between Tripp Road and Mosquito Creek, respectively, the statement said.

All lane shifts may be subject to at least 24-hour postponement should workers be unable to execute construction due to inclement weather, the ITA said.

A 45-mph speed limit will be enforced in the area of construction at all times, whether workers are present or not, the statement said. The minimum penalty for speeding in a construction zone is $375.

Eastbound traffic on the tollway has been traveling on the westbound side of the road between Rockford and Elgin since spring to accommodate the first phase of the $2.2 billion I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project, which is nearly completed for this construction season, the statement said.

The tollway's expansion from two eastbound lanes to three will be completed by the end of 2013, the agency reports.

Westbound lanes on I-90 will be rebuilt and widened in 2014, according to the ITA.
