Ill. House will consider anti-gun bill

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois House panel has approved a narrowed version of tougher anti-gun legislation.

The Judiciary Committee debated Rep. Michael Zalewski's bill for more than two hours Tuesday evening before sending it to the floor on an 11-4 vote.

The legislation backed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel tries to slice into city gun violence by putting felons and gang members who unlawfully tote firearms away for longer.

But it also requires that first-time offenders get a minimum of a year in prison and that they serve 85 percent of their sentences instead of 50 percent.

The National Rifle Association says that could snag law-abiding gun owners who make honest mistakes.

Other critics say it will cost the state prison system $700 million more.
