Attempted copper theft suspects damage lights in Peoria park

PEORIA, Ariz. -

It's that time of year -- the weather is cooling off, meaning children can finally go outside and play without it being too hot, but for some kids in the west valley, their games were cut short after thieves tried to steal copper wiring from park lights, leaving the fields in the dark.

It was lights out Tuesday night at Rio Vista Community Park near Loop 101 and Thunderbird Road.

Some would-be thieves tried to steal the copper wiring from the park's lights.

Parents of the kids that normally play at Rio Vista Community Center received a note Tuesday saying that all games had been canceled because some thieves tried to steal copper from the lights.

The worst part is: they didn't even get away with any copper.

Not only were the games ruined, but a fundraiser was supposed to take place too.

"Tonight was actually going to be a drive for underprivileged kids where there would be donations made and everything...that of course didn't happen tonight," said Kyle Kraus, parent of little league player.

There were a few softball field lights that were spared.

There are no suspects in the case.

Police believe the attempted theft happened late Monday night.
