Local College Students Win Distinguished Award For 'Titan Arm'

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The James Dyson Award tasks next generation designers from 18 countries with creating products to solve a range of issues. Never has a team from the United States won this award, until now.

The project that won this year is called Titan Arm. It is an exoskeleton that increases human strength and also provides data for doctors. It can be used by occupational lifers or by people with upper body injuries who need mobility assistance or want to regain their independence.

The Titan Arm's designers are engineering students from University of Pennsylvania, the coveted Ivy League university in Philadelphia. Three of the four designers, Elizabeth Beattie, Nick McGill, and Nick Parrotta, spoke to Good Day today about the Titan Arm.

"We were really inspired by other exoskeletal work out there and seeing how this could improve people's lives," said Parrotta.

"We actually developed it for about 2,000 dollars," said Parrotta. "Which is considerably cheaper than existing exoskeleton."

The James Dyson Award gives the team £30,000 to further develop their design. In addition, £10,000 will be given to the University of Pennsylvania Engineering department.

"Hi parents," Sheneille Jones said to the camera. "You did a great job. Whatever you fed them, I'm going to feed my kids."
