Janitor Gets Promoted To Principal

Posted: Updated:

He's going from the janitor's closet to the principal's office!

Joseph "Gabe" Sonnier, a longtime school janitor at Port Barre Elementary School in Louisiana, was named the school's next principal Friday by the Saint Landry School Board.

Sonnier spent 27 years as a janitor there but always continued adding to his education, earning a bachelor and master's degree along the way.

"I would come to work at like five in the morning and leave for seven and go to school all day and then come back and finish up my eight hours of work here, and go home and do homework," Sonnier said.

Sonnier does have classroom experience. He previously taught third grade.

"I taught for three years, third grade for three years, and then I went to get my bachelor's. I did it through Arkansas State University," Sonnier said.

Other school faculty say admire Sonnier for putting family first before taking care of himself and they say that seeing him achieve this is wonderful.

"God knows the time. God knows the season," Sonnier said. "There's a season for everything, and this is my time, and I feel it and I know it."
