Multiple Shootings Have Neighborhood On Edge

Posted: Updated:
NORTH PHILADELPHIA -

Circles mark the spot where police found a dozen shell casings Sunday night just ten feet from Evan Dominique's front door at 28th and Cecil B. Moore. Dominique was inside watching TV with his two-year-old son when the gunfire erupted outside his first floor apartment.

"When I heard repeated gunshots I got on the floor with my son," he told Fox 29.

The shooting outside this corner store left two men wounded so Monday extra police units roamed the area as officers on foot patrol made their way up and down nearby streets. The shootings had this neighborhood on edge.

Dominique says the gunfire was too close for comfort.

"Bullets don't got no names, don't got no targets," he said.

Within an hour, less than a mile away at 22nd and Lehigh, two more men were shot outside a deli at a busy intersection. The shooting was caught on tape by surveillance cameras at the store. Police believe a shotgun toting suspect rode up on a bike and opened fire just after 9 Sunday night. One victim was shot in the chest, the other in the shoulder.

"It's so dangerous you can't walk nowhere. It's that dangerous man," said Kendal Smith.

Smith lives up the block on 22nd Street. He's lived here all his life and he's been the victim of violence himself this year. He says the area needs more police protection.

"They need more support of cops up here heavy to keep the crime down because it's so bad you can't go nowhere," he said.

Evan Dominique, meanwhile, was left worried and wondering if the two double shootings were related, with more violence on the way . Police are investigating.

"That's crazy that could have been any one of us," he said. "You can't even come outside sit out here for a while with your kid, without worrying about something happening."

Police believe a teenager riding a bike and carrying a shotgun opened fire at 22nd and Lehigh. They have no leads yet on the shooting on 28th Street.

Police say there have been 11 shootings in this area in the past two weeks. There were only 5 shootings here last year in the entire month of November.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
