Surveys Reveal Employer Attitudes Toward College Grads

Posted: Updated:

If you're a college grad who can't get a job, some experts say that it's not because you're not qualified, it's because you lack interpersonal skills. A few studies shed some light on this assertion.

The ability to communicate with your bosses, prioritize your work load and function in a team environment is not there, according to these experts.

One survey by St. Louis Community College found that most managers accused applicants of not being able to solve problems or think creatively. It also showed that 60% of employers thought that applicants fresh from college lacked "communication and interpersonal skills."

Another survey talked to senior executives and found that 44% of respondents cited soft skills, like communication, critical thinking, and collaboration as lacking areas in the workforce skills of students. This study was done by Adecco Group.

In a separate survey by Talent Shortage Survey, nearly one in five employers say that they can't fill positions because the candidates are lacking a wide range of skills including motivation, interpersonal skills, proper appearance, flexibility. Punctuality and general lack of available talent. This study surveyed 40,000 employers across 42 countries.

They say there's also a big gap in what job seekers think they're capable of and what they can actually do.

And a study by Harris Interactive corroborates the findings by Talent Shortage Survey. The survey found that students seem to have an inflated sense of their skills and abilities compared to managers. For example, 79% of students surveyed think they are very organized to be in the workforce. However, only 54% of hiring managers feel the same way about the applicants.
