Targeted Businesses Lose Cash With New Scam

Posted: Updated:
MARLTON, N.J. -

Some businesses in South Jersey were targeted in a new scam that has them losing loads of cash.

Multiple stores and restaurants in the Marlton, Burlington County area have been victimized.

Police are looking for the person responsible. Fox 29's Leigh Scheps went to Mount Laurel where one guy is walking around with a $100 and turning it into a lot more.

It may have look like a normal sales transaction inside Joy's Hallmark on North Maple Avenue in Evesham Township, but police say this con man scammed the card store out of a hundred bucks.

"I know the woman who works for us feels horrible because when you look at it on video it looks too easy," Store Owner Ron Monokian.

Police explain this guy's targeted at least four South Jersey stores in five days tricking the sales people all the same way.

Here's how investigators say it goes down:

The man picks out an item for under $10 dollars. He pays with a hundred dollar bill. When the clerk gives him his change, he slips in an extra buck and then insists he was given too much change. He then demands the one hundred dollar bill back and causes a distraction. In this case dropping stuff from the register on the floor, confusing the clerk. He then leaves with $100 he came in with and the change.

One long time customer can't believe it.

"He has some nerve. Big nerve. How could he put a hundred dollar bill there and pick it up and take it home? I have no idea," Zev Shakarjian said.

Mount Laurel Police believe the same guy hit up the Bob Evans on Route 73 and Pizzutillo's Pizza on South Church Street within an hour of scheming Joy's Hallmark. He's seen in a surveillance photo from Pizzutillo's wearing the exact same outfit.

Now Joy's Hallmark is putting in new procedures so something like this doesn't happen again.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
