Alabama Man Forced To Rebury Deceased Wife

A man in Stevenson, Alabama, must remove his wife's body from the grave that he dug for her on his front lawn. For four and a half years, James Davis fought to grant his wife, Patsy, her dying wish: to be buried in their yard.

"They wanted me to move her … to a cemetery somewhere or another, but I promised momma she could be there at the house, and I have been forced to have her cremated to keep her at the house," said Davis. Davis finally lost his fight with city hall. He consented to have Patsy's remains exhumed on Friday.

"You know I don't understand why all is happening, but I am glad it is over with," he said.

Davis says he doesn't regret spending most of his money fighting a court battle to keep his wife in the yard. He says he still thinks it is the right thing to do, but the city of Stevenson won a lawsuit claiming the grave made Davis' yard an illegal cemetery.

"We built that home there. Momma sat out in the yard in a rocking chair and watched me and the kids build that home. That's where we raised our family and it's a landmark to us," Davis said.

Davis says he will hire a contractor to dig up his wife's body, then he says he will have her cremated so she can come back home.
