Examining Flier From Redskins/Eagles Game 50 Years Ago

Posted: Updated:

The picture on the right was the program for the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins match-up 50 years ago this week.

At that time, it wasn't this program cover that was controversial; it was actually the time of the game itself.

The date was November 24, 1963, two days following the assassination of President John Kennedy.

Both teams asked to have the games postponed, but the NFL moved forward. The game played on, but did include some special moments. Players from both teams contributed money to the family of Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit, who was also killed by suspected Kennedy assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. The game ball was also sent to the White House in honor of President Kennedy. Unfortunately for Philly, the Eagles lost the match, 13-10.

Back to that program cover, in 1963, the image didn't shock anyone, but that wouldn't be the case today. Even the Washington Redskins name is now at the heart of controversy. There's a big push for the team to change it, out of respect for Native Americans. President Obama even weighed in on the controversy, saying that he would think about changing the team's name if he were the owner. Sportscaster Bob Costas also weighed in, saying, "…think for a moment about the term "Redskins," and how it truly differs from all the others. Ask yourself what the equivalent would be, if directed toward African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, or members of any other ethnic group. When considered it that way, "Redskins" can't possibly honor a heritage, or noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term! It's an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present-day intent."

No matter what you think of their name, we know Eagles fans want to beat the Redskins on Sunday and break a 10-game home losing streak. All week, our Good Day team has been trying to help by "Cleansing the Linc" in some very interesting ways. Check out everything we did to bring a victory. Go Eagles!
