Another Rutgers coach accused of bullying

Posted: Updated:

Mark Tyree says Rutgers is at it again, protecting another bullying coach.

Tyree's son, freshman defensive back Jevon, says the abuse began he was cursed out by defensive coordinator Dave Cohen last spring during a study hall session.

"He gets in Jevon's face at the end, Jevon said he actually spit in his face” Mr. Tyree said. “Cohen said he had a lisp, I said if you have a lisp you shouldn't be that close to someone you're arguing with. Jevon took it as a spray and then said to Jevon, I should head butt you."

Tyree says the abuse started after his son suffered a hamstring injury during spring training.

Soon after, he allegedly excluded from team meetings.

It all happened after the men's basketball coach Mike Rice was fired in April for abusing his players, even throwing basketballs at them.

In a statement released Friday, Rutgers said "Cohen apologized the following day for his participation in the escalation of banter, which resulted in the use of inappropriate language. At no time was there any threat of physical violence, which was verified by the academic counselor, who was present in the room".

Mark Tyree said the woman that works in the study hall said it was the worst behavior she had seen in 13 years."

Rutgers says head coach Kyle Flood met with Mr. Tyree. The school claims the Director of Athletics Julie Hermann spoke with him too and confirmed that the matter was resolved to his satisfaction.

Tyree says that's a flat out lie.

"I haven't spoken to her at all ever" Mr. Tyree said.

Fox 5 tried to get clarification from Rutgers, but a spokesperson wouldn't comment.

Jevon is still taking class at Rutgers but plans to transfer somewhere else next year where he can play football.
