Peoria-area TV stations host telethon for tornado victims

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

15 tornadoes pounded central and southern Illinois with winds up to 190 miles an hour, killing six people. Emergency officials say the number of homes damaged by Sunday's tornadoes now tops 900 -- and that number is expected to go up.

Now, a massive fundraiser is underway to help raise money for tornado victims. Local television stations in Peoria, including FOX 32's sister station there, banded together to host and broadcast a special fundraiser with one goal: raise as much money as possible to help the thousands of people who lost so much in just a matter of seconds.

The telethon, entitled, "Help on the Homefront," is being done in coordination with the Red Cross which has set up the Illinois Disaster and Storms Fund.

On Wednesday, Governor Quinn visited the studio to lend his support. He talked about visiting Washington during his tour of the communities affected by Sunday's tornadoes, and hearing stories of heartbreak and heroism.

"It's pretty hard, you know, I mean if it's something you've lived in for many many years and that you raised your family in and to see it demolished in a matter of seconds. It's traumatic and heartbreaking and I think it is very very important that all of us understand that we have to rise to the occasion as citizens and help our neighbors."

As of Wednesday evening, more than $350,000 had been raised.

Anyone who wants to make a donation specifically for this relief fund, will have to mail a check to the Central Illinois Chapter of the Red Cross:
