Delaware Police Searching For Person Who Shot Trooper

Posted: Updated:
WILMINGTON, Del. -

Police in Delaware are out in full force looking for the person who shot a state trooper.

Although they raided one home Wednesday night and took a man into custody, officials say they haven't charged anyone with the crime.

The officer was shot in the arm in Wilmington at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

He's the fourth officer shot in the past nine months in the city, and he's the 143rd person shot in Delaware's largest city. That breaks an all-time record for Wilmington in terms of gun violence.

It was still daylight when police were speaking to a woman who had a car in which officers could see stolen merchandise. The state trooper was there to back them up.

That's when someone suddenly started shooting at police, who immediately took cover. Residents on the street at the time say police had no idea where the shots were coming from, how far away, or even what direction they were coming from.

Local, county, and state police all rushed to the scene near 24th and Market streets, blocking off several roads.

When witnesses saw the massive police presence, they said they knew this was not your run-of-the-mill crime. Some question if on-going tensions with police in the neighborhood led someone to just shoot at the officers.

Only FOX 29 News cameras were there as police swarmed a home on the 100 block of East 25th Street, and, earlier in the day, a man was taken in for questioning, although officers say no one is charged with the crime.

As for the officer, he was released from the hospital Wednesday night and is reported to be doing well.
