Connecticut Couple Celebrates 81 Years Of Marriage

Posted: Updated:

A Connecticut couple has stood the test of time for 81 years. Meet America's longest-married couple, Ann and John Betar.

The Betars are preparing to celebrate eighty-one years of marriage.

The couple left Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1932 and relocated to Harrison, New York to avoid Ann's father's plans to marry her off to a man twenty years older than her.

Over eight decades later, the love birds have five children, 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. The couple, 97 and 101, respectively, still occasionally have disagreements.

"Well, marriage isn't a lovey-dovey thing… You learn to accept one another's ways of life, agreements, disagreements--disagreements on our children, preparation on bringing up your kids. That was the main interest... was your children," said wife Ann.

"It's only about cooking. It's only about cooking, that's the only arguments we had," husband John disagreed.

Mr. and Mrs. Betar got eloped on November 25th, 1932. Their marriage is six years short of the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest marriage.
