Doylestown Will Have Free Parking On 'Small Business Saturday'

Posted: Updated:

Today is Black Friday and Monday Is Cyber Monday, but sandwiched in between is Small Business Saturday.

Now in its fourth year, it's an important day for our local mom and pop shops. Last year alone, shoppers reported spending 5.5 billion dollars with small businesses that day.

Derrick Morgan from the Discover Doylestown Committee talked to Good Day about the importance of shopping local tomorrow. The committee consists of local merchants and restaurateurs who educate the community on the benefits of shopping locally. Derrick is a business owner. He owns a T-shirt shop called Monkey's Uncle. They make retro, vintage, sports and pop culture T-shirts.

American Express started the Small Business Saturday in 2010. It's since gained a lot of recognition. American Express and patch.com put together a program this year called Park on Patch. As part of the program, they will pay for parking throughout the towns chosen. Only 50 towns in the entire United States were picked and Doylestown was picked from our area.

In addition to helping your local economy, you find some unique items not in big box stores. There is also a myth, a thought that it won't be as cheap to shop locally, but that myth isn't true, according to small business owners.

"It is a misconception that these boutiques and small shops are very expensive. It is not the case. The thing that real small businesses cater to is, they are going to give you more personal shopping experience and remember your name when you come in," said Morgan. "Small businesses, they do sales just like the big box stores do. You will not have $200, 50-inch TVs because most small businesses are not doing business that way, but we will find things that are more unique and obscure, rare and cool."

As part of the Shop Small campaign, Doylestown will have a lot of events to try and draw people in.
