Super Bowl XLVIII Will Have Highest Price Tag Ever

Posted: Updated:

Super Bowl XLVIII is going to be big and it takes two states to host it.

In about 61 days, the Super Bowl will be played at MetLife Stadium. The week of festivities leading up to the game is expected to generate a boom for the region, but hosting the biggest game in the world in New York and New Jersey will also come with the biggest price tag in history.

"This is New York; it's the capital of the world," said a New Yorker.

In the New York City area, most things come with a premium price tag and hosting the Super Bowl is no different.

"So much money going to be spent... going to be ridiculous," opined a passerby.

According to IRS documents obtained by the Star Ledger, hosting the big game will cost a record 70 million dollars.

Al Kelly is CEO of the New York New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee. The big dollar figure reflects the reality of the region and costs to create the committee itself, he says.

"In our case... this was a start from scratch---31-32 employees," Kelley explained.

The committee raises money through sponsors and soliciting donations. Costs include funding for the football themed Huddle Shuttle Tour, coordinating an army of volunteers and helping to turn a 10 block stretch of Midtown, Manhattan into Super Bowl Boulevard.

"The owners...engage and enrich community - invest into our community," Kelley said.

The NFL has said there is no set cost for hosting a Super Bowl. The league covers the cost of the game itself.
