Suspect In Marine's Fatal Shooting In Custody, Police Say

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

Police say they have taken into custody a man suspected of killing a former U.S. Marine over the weekend in Camden.

Darrell Crone, 31, of the 1200 block of Park Boulevard in Camden, turned himself in at the Camden County Police Dept.'s administration building around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Crone is charged with murder in the shooting death of Timothy Loper Jr. over the weekend.

Authorities say Loper tried to break up a fight outside 20 Horse Tavern at the intersection of Second and Spruce streets at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, but they allege Crone fired his gun during the altercation, killing Loper.

Investigators say the 27-year-old father and Marine, who served his country during two tours in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, was shot in the back with a .45-caliber handgun. They say five shell casings were found at the scene.

An arraignment is expected to be held Thursday, police said.
