Soldier Returns Home From Afghanistan To Surprise Daughter

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX, AZ -

A kindergartner got a big surprise in class yesterday. Her father, gone for nearly a year, returns home from Afghanistan and surprises her in the classroom.

Sergeant Kevin Swaton knew he would be coming home in December, but he just didn't know when.

"We're all just hoping that we would get back before Christmas and it happened and I couldn't ask for anything more," Sgt. Swaton said.

The soldier and his wife decided to surprise their daughter Aliyah, a kindergartner at Sunnyslope School in Phoenix.

For the past year, the soldier only saw his daughter over the Internet.

"She would say she misses me and can't wait for me to get home and then my wife would tell me that randomly her and my son would say they love me and I just wanted to come home to them," Sgt. Swaton recalled.

In addition to their kindergartner, the couple has a young son. The deployment was tough on them all

"I try to make them happy and get their minds off it. Kept them really busy; told them he'd be home soon," wife said Holly Swaton.

This latest deployment to Afghanistan was the soldier's second tour of duty, and this time he's hoping to stay home for good.

"Now that she is older, I know that it was harder on her. It is just great coming back to them," Swaton recalled.
