11-Year-Old Boy Killed In ATV Accident

Logan Twp, NJ -

A family is mourning the loss of an eleven-year-old Gloucester County boy, killed by a dump truck while riding on an ATV. The horrible accident happened on Tuesday while a group of kids played in the snow in Logan Township.

A makeshift memorial sits outside of 11-year-old Russell Leone's Logan Township home just a couple hundred yards from where the fifth-grader was killed yesterday.

Police say the ATV he was driving through the snow dipped onto Oak Grove Road and collided with a plow attached to an R. E Pierson's dump truck traveling east.

Leone's passenger, a 13-year-old-girl, was badly hurt. She's being treated at DuPont Hospital. Two other girls riding on an attached sleigh were not injured. Logan Township Police Chief James Schmidt says none of the riders was wearing helmets.

"It's a tragic accident," Chief Schmidt said. "When the kids set out to have a good time in the snow and do what they did that was I'm sure the last thing on their mind."

The chief tells us that a line of trees likely obstructed the views of both Leone and the truck driver.

Today students at Logan Township Elementary School heard about the death of their classmate. It was news that devastated Sharon Ellis's daughter who was playing in the snow with the boy just a couple of hours earlier.

"Shocking for her...she just saw him...that kind of made it a little but more difficult," Ellis said.

Ellis's daughter came home from school early after meeting with grief counselors Principal Catherine Kelly released a statement reading in part, "The Logan Township School District Community has been saddened by the loss of one of our elementary students. We are working together to provide counseling support for students throughout the district during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved and I know our entire School family feels the same."

"My heart goes out to the family," Ellis said. "Just sending prayers especially this close to the holidays."
