NY health exchange: behind the numbers

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

This week the New York State Health Department released new figures to show how well the state health exchange marketplace is working. But one health care expert says it is nothing to brag about.

The department put out a press release saying that as of Monday, December 9, 2013, more than 100,000 people had enrolled on the exchange website, nystateofhealth.ny.gov, up from just 26,000 in October. The department also claims uninsured individuals were able to buy health coverage for 53 percent less than last year.

Center for Medical Progress fellow Yevgeniy Feyman says the federal government pumped millions of dollars into state coffers to help get the word out about the health care plan changes and the websites. There has been a public awareness campaign and some TV ads, but determining where all that tax money went could be impossible, Feyman says. He also says that that the many problems implementing the affordable care act could have been avoided if the government had worked with existing private health exchanges, instead of trying to create their own.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
