Woman Delivers Baby In Vehicle After Being Stranded

WEST VALLEY CITY, UT -

A woman goes into labor in Utah when something unexpected happens: she and her husband get stranded on a closed road.

The closure forced Margarita Arellanes to have her baby in a car and seek help at a nearby restaurant.

Fox's Todd Tanner tells the story.

"She had delivered the baby by herself. And she was holding the baby, just blood all over her. It was crazy," said Jose Orozco, the owner of the nearby El Paisa Grill.

That was the scene around 11 a.m. on Thursday in the parking lot of El Paisa Grill just off State Road 201, moments after a frantic father asked for help.

"Who was crazier, Dad or Mom? I think Dad. She was like ‘it's ok. I'm fine.' A couple minutes later we had the ambulance here helping out already," Orozco recalled.

The West Valley City Firefighters quickly came and removed a newborn baby from the couple's SUV.

"We got little Sebastian over here," father Santiago Arellanes said.

Mother and child are fine now, resting at Pioneer Valley Hospital, but there were definitely reasons to worry on Thursday morning.

"I'm not going to make it, I'm not going to make it," mother Margarita Arellanes recalled what was going through her mind at the time.

Margarita and her husband Santiago were headed from West Valley to University Hospital when power lines fell on the road ahead of them. In the two hours that followed, they traveled only three miles.

"I called the clinic already and I was like hey, ‘I got my wife in labor, so what do I need to do?'" Santiago Arellanes recalled.

Santiago used a shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord.

When they finally exited State Road 201, El Paisa was the first thing they saw.

"He's like, it's a boy. I'm like, ‘hey, how about you name him Paisa?,'" said Orozco.

"Yeah, the Paisa Grill. I said, ‘nope, I don't think so,'" Santiago Arellanes said as he laughed.
