Soldier Rachel Washburn Was Eagles Cheerleader

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Once an Eagles cheerleader, 25-year-old Rachel Washburn became an Army intelligence officer and helped deliver a baby in Afghanistan.

Washburn went from carrying Pom Poms to carrying assault rifles and pistols, but the transition was years in the making. While studying history at Drexel University and cheering for the Eagles for three seasons, Washburn was an Army ROTC student.

During one mission in an Afghan village, her unit got stuck in the snow. To make the situation worse, a villager then went into labor. Washburn stepped in with her partner and successfully delivered the baby by following directions from the medical officer over the radio.

Washburn's father was an Army and Air Force pilot. She had returned stateside as of November but is eager to sign up for a few more years of service.
