MESA, Ariz. -

An 8-year-old girl is safe after being taken from in front of her home on Sunday.

A lot of kids play outside of a Mesa apartment complex near Dobson and Broadway.

On Sunday afternoon, police say 22-year-old Robert Milliron snatched one of those kids.

Two women driving in the complex saw the kidnapping and called police.

"When this call first came out, literally, I held my breath," said Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato.

Investigators say Milliron was driving by in a sedan, saw the 8-year-old girl riding her bike, pulled over, took her and sped off.

"She rode her bike all over the complex," said Jordan Chavez, a friend of the kidnapped girl.

Police say the little girl was only with the kidnapper for about a minute because he sped away down an alley and crashed. Afterward, the girl was able to get away.

"We were very fortunate an accident occurred. I don't know what would have happened, but our imaginations can take us to some dark places," said Landato.

After the crash, the girl ran away and into the arms of an officer who was in the neighborhood.

Police say Milliron also took off and tried to hide in a check cashing shop, but another officer noticed him and arrested him.

Liliana Gonzalez lives in the complex and says she worries about her daughters when they play in this complex.

Parents there say, after this, they're going to keep their little ones closer.

Mesa police say this story has a happy ending, thanks to the neighbors who were quick to report the kidnapping and the crash.

"Sometimes that's literally the difference between solving something and not solving something, because those initial moments may be all that we have," said Landato.

Police say it doesn't look like Milliron hurt the girl while he had her and neither the girl nor the alleged kidnapper were badly hurt in the crash.

Police say Milliron did not know the little girl and don't know why he decided to take her.

He faces charges of kidnapping, failure to stay at a hit and run with injuries, aggravated assault on a minor and unlawful imprisonment.
