Man Fatally Shoots Stepdaughter Mistaken For Burglar

Posted: Updated:

A man mistakenly thinks his step daughter is a burglar, ending in tragedy. The step father shot and killed the 14-year-old girl. FOX's Dave Young has the story.

Escorted by police, in shock over what's just happened inside the first call to 9-1-1 came just before 6 a.m.

For some reason a 14 year old girl who lives at the home was trying to enter the basement when her stepfather mistook her for a burglar and opened fire.

Neighbors Jani Harvey said she heard the shots.

"I heard three bangs they weren't all right together it was like bang, bang bang I assumed it was somebody hitting like on a car a garage or a door or something like that and then I saw lights" Jani said.

The teenager was taken to the hospital where she died of her wounds. Crime scene investigators were on scene collecting evidence throughout the day.

We've learned the victim was the oldest of three children who live here. Neighbors say the family was quiet and mostly kept to themselves.

"I just feel horrible for the family I know my mom is freaking out because it's kinda heartbreaking hearing that a child is shot at all especially around holidays because this is something the family is always going to remember," Jani's 16-year-old daughter Megan Harvey said.

Now the family and their neighbors are dealing with yet another tragic loss of life during what's supposed to be a time of celebration.

Colorado Springs Police say they will continue gathering evidence in the case. The District Attorney's office will decide if any charges will be filed.
