Last Minute Shoppers Scramble Before Christmas

Posted: Updated:

Some stores may have stayed open for days so folks could get all their shopping done on time. But every year there are procrastinators who wait until the bitter end.

Fox 29's Leigh Scheps takes us through the city to see why people are still getting gifts.

T'was the night before Christmas and all through the streets, people like Matt Kohlmayer picked up last minute treats.

"Got some nice cigars and I am going to enjoy the holiday even though I am working," said Kohlmayer from Trenton.

The last minute rush is no easy task, but Raelia Lewis got it done fast.

"I started today," Lewis exclaimed. "I am the epitome of last minute shopping."

From Center City to Rittenhouse Square shoppers scoured stores with snow in the air.

Many people tell us work kept them away, which is why they waited until today.

"Maybe you don't want to do it and it just comes to the point where you have to go and do it," said Beau Giovanitti

When the clock struck six, the doors at Macy's locked. Many shoppers tried to get in. When they couldn't, they were shocked.

Fox29 asked Jonathan Spencer, "What are you going to do now?" He said,  "Uh, think on my feet."

But it's not just presents these folks are last minute buying. Mima Bundy Evans needed pans for the dinner she's making.

"I haven't started. I am going to start. I am going to be up early in the morning," said Bundy Evans.

Then, there's a couple celebrating more than a decade in love. At Gold Galore II, the hubby bought the Mrs. A new ring he's proud of.

"It was a plan to bring her down here," said Tyrone Fraley.

His wife, Tanya, exclaimed, "I am very excited I don't know what to say I am speechless."

Back to Matt and his off the clock cigar delight, he shouted, "Merry Christmas to the whole Delaware Valley-Philadelphia Area."

And to all, a goodnight.
