Light Bulb Phase out Jan. 1

Posted: Updated:

At Zinger Hardware in Central Austin, owner Michael Ferweda is working to educate his customers about a big change on the way.  "There's a lot of resistance from consumers to want to change," Ferweda says.  Starting January 1, production of 60 and 40-watt incandescent light bulbs will end.  According to researchers, those are the most popular bulbs in the country.
"This is a part of the global program.  This is not just the U.S.," Ferweda explains.  "The U.S. is a little behind other countries."  Consumers and businesses will have to replace those traditional bulbs with more energy-efficient alternatives including halogen incandescent bulbs, LEDs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).

"Halogen bulbs are basically an incandescent bulbs that are very efficient.  What we're trying to do is go to a more global efficiency and lower our energy usage." Fereda tells FOX 7.  According to Computerworld, only four in 10 consumers are aware that the bulbs will be phased out.

Ferweda says, "We've seen difficulty in distribution because there was so much a surplus of older bulbs and the phase in of the new bulbs wasn't as readily expected."

Consumers like Kar Sana are catching on and starting to make the switch.  "As we look at things and the landlord looks at things, we kind of tend towards ordering more LED, from online, things like that," he says about ordering light bulbs for the home he rents.

While some energy-efficient bulbs may be more expensive, they have a longer life span so in the end, the phase out will reduce spending and energy.

In 2012 and 2013, 100 and 75-watt incandescent bulbs were phased out.
