Judge To OK Bail For Pa. Priest After Appeal Win

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A judge has set bail at $250,000 for a Roman Catholic priest whose conviction in the clergy sex abuse scandal was overturned by a Pennsylvania appeals court.

Monsignor William Lynn will also have to submit to electronic monitoring and surrender his passport.

The priest is serving a three to six-year sentence at a state prison in Waymart, Pa. He was the first church official ever convicted over his handling of abuse claims.

An appeals court threw out his case last week, saying Lynn was tried under a child-endangerment law that didn't apply to him.

On Monday, his lawyers asked Common Pleas Judge M. Teresa Sarmina to release the 62-year-old priest while prosecutors appeal. Lynn did not attend the hearing.

The Philadelphia District attorney Seth Williams vows to restore Lynn's conviction.

"In their ruling last week the Superior Court panel said that Lynn's actions did not endanger the welfare of children under the law. But the evidence established that Lynn did endanger the welfare of children. The law is clear and it says that endangering the welfare of children is a crime. And in fact, I can say with confidence that the way the Superior Court panel read this law is not how this law is supposed to work." DA Williams said.

The Survivor's Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) has also issued a statement supporting DA Williams. They say that bail should not be set because Msgr. Wm Lynn could flee overseas if freed.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
