Controversy Surrounds Song from Latest Beyonce Album

Posted: Updated:

Just when it seemed Beyonce could do no wrong, she is under fire for using an audio recording of the Challenger shuttle explosion in one of her new songs--a move many are calling insensitive and inappropriate.

"Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction"

That haunting recording from immediately after the 1986 explosion of the challenger space shuttle is how Beyonce's song "XO" opens.

It's a stark contract to the rest of the video for the song...in which Beyonce is hanging out at the amusement park in Coney Island.

The inclusion of the audio clip has puzzled many...and offended those with ties to the Challenger disaster.

One former NASA employee called it inappropriate to the extreme.

And Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, the widow of Commander Dick Scobee...one of the seven crew members killed in the disaster, released a statement saying the moment included in the song is an emotionally difficult one

"We were disappointed to learn that an audio clip from the day we lost our heroic Challenger crew was used in the song 'XO."

New York Post music critic Hardeep Phull first noted the Challenger audio clip in his track by track review of Beyonce's CD two weeks ago and says he doesn't believe Beyonce intended to offend any listeners.

"If you listen to it and read between the lines it's about finding hope in dire situations , but I think its difficult to find that association for a lot of listeners."

Beyonce released her own statement saying:

"The song XO was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones...The songwriters included the audio in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten."

Now some are calling on her to cut out the audio from digital downloads altogether.
