Two Women Save Baby On Plane

Posted: Updated:

What started out as a normal flight turned into a day that two Massachusetts women will never forget.

Jeanne Gallahue and Rosemary Smith were on board a flight from Washington, DC to Puerto Rico when they heard calls for help from the back of the plane.

"Just horrible screams from the back on the plane and someone yelling on the intercom, ‘are there any doctors or medical people on board?'" recalled Smith.

They found a six-month-old baby unresponsive.

"We flipped her over and we basically just started to resuscitate her…" said Smith.

In a stroke of luck, Gallahue trains first responders and Smith is an intensive care nurse. The two starting performing CPR. They say that the baby lost her heartbeat seven times before she started breathing again.

"I was flipping the baby, she was checking the eyes, we were checking respiration, We were checking pressures," Gallahue recalled.

It was nearly an hour before the pilot could make an emergency landing where the baby was rushed to the hospital.

"By the time we landed she was crying, so that was an amazing thing," smith recalled.

We're told the child is now ok.
