Newark violence ensnares teenage victims and suspects

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Teens in Newark, N.J., are feeling the stress and the sadness during a holiday homicide spree where some of the innocent victims as well as the alleged gunmen are under 21. This comes as murders in Essex County are up 25 percent over last year.

Zainee Hailey, 13, was lovingly remembered by her family and friends as police picked up a 15-year-old Newark resident whose identity they would not disclose because he is under age. He is charged with her Christmas Day murder, the murder of another teen and wounding of a third. Officials say none of the three teens was the intended target.

Police are also making progress in solving the murder of Reginald Terry, 18, a college honors student who was shot by random gunfire while protecting the life of a young woman.

Damiar Pendergrass, 18, of Newark was arrested and charged, and a warrant issued for Raquan Langford, 19.

Solving these heartbreaking crimes is one thing. But teens here know that even if they avoid trouble, it can come looking for them. They're hoping a new year will bring more peaceful streets.

Police tell us that they've been able to make progress in these cases because of tips they've received from the public.

The mayors of New Jersey's three largest urban areas said Monday they are looking at inter-city collaboration as a way to stem the flow of bloodshed on their streets. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and Paterson Mayor Jose Torres spoke mainly in generalities about the partnership, but said specifics would be hammered out at a mayors' roundtable that will convene in September.
