Recreational Marijuana Shops Open In Colorado

Posted: Updated:

Customers lined up early on New Year's Day for their chance to buy pot in Colorado.

The nation's first legal recreational marijuana shops opened there on Wednesday.

Adults 21 and over can now legally buy up to an ounce of pot at licensed stores.

Supporters hope legalization will prove to be a better alternative to the so-called "war on drugs."

Shoppers lined up in droves to make their first purchase of legal recreational marijuana, and Colorado officials are hoping it will pay off.

Other states that are considering adopting similar rules are going to be watching, too, especially those in Washington State, where recreational marijuana sales are set to begin later this year.

Nearly 5,000 applications to grow, process or sell cannabis under Washington's recreational pot law have been received.

Legalization critics say the easy access may result in increased drug abuse and crime.

In the meantime, all eyes will be on Colorado, Fox's Dan Springer reported.
