Girl Delivers Sister After Mom Goes Into Labor

Posted: Updated:

2013 ended with a major memory for one young girl and her family.

That's because she helped deliver her baby sister after her mom went into labor early.

Alyssa Meza, 9, of Chicago, was at home with her mom Sunday when the emergency happened. She's sitting beside her aunt in this video.

But her mother's water broke two weeks early and, with little time to react, Alyssa rushed into action when the baby started to come.

"We were sitting down in my room, and her water had just broken," Alyssa said. "But then she got up to go to the bathroom because she started feeling like the baby was coming out. So, she's standing in the bathroom. I told her to push the baby out, and I got the baby, and I grabbed a towel and wrapped it up."

The baby was still wrapped up in an umbilical cord, so Alyssa ran to a neighbor for help, who helped her cut the cord before paramedics could arrive.

The new baby's name is Aaliyah. She's a healthy 6 pounds and 15 ounces.
