PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

We're learning new information about the two suspects accused of opening fire on a Phoenix Police officer and a Maricopa County Sheriff's posse member who rushed to help.

Roger Allen Sharp and David Lee Murray, Jr. were booked into the 4th Avenue Jail and face a slew of charges.

The officer and posse member remain in critical condition.  They made it out of surgery and seem to be doing okay, but doctors are keeping a close eye on them.

Sharp and Murray are accused of being involved in Tuesday's armed robbery and police shooting.

Authorities say Sharp was the shooter -- overpowering the officer and shooting him with his own gun, and also shooting the posse volunteer who stepped in to help.

"There seems to be a war on law enforcement around here," said Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

It started near 44th Street and Thomas after the men allegedly pointed a gun at two Pink Rhino Gentleman's club employees and demanded the $18,000 they were on their way to deposit.

Police say Sharp and Murray took off from the scene.  An officer spotted their car a few blocks away and began following them.  Police say Sharp ran a red light and crashed into a truck driven by a posse volunteer.  That Phoenix officer who was following them pulled his gun and tried to stop Sharp, but police say Sharp got into a scuffle with the officer.  That's when the posse member tried to help.  Police say Sharp wrestled the gun away from the officer and shot both men.

"He came through the operation.. that's a good thing. He's still on the stable.. critical list, but I'm hopeful that he'll pass and he'll do great," said Arpaio.

Arpaio visited the 63-year-old posse member and his family at the hospital.

"He's in our search and rescue right now.  He was in our air posse.  He was 82nd Airborne, a Vietnam veteran.. tough guy," said Arpaio.

According to court records, Sharp has been in prison before, convicted of possession of a forgery device.  Court records show he was on probation.

And we know the name of the officer shot, but police have asked us not to release it yet.  He is 34-years-old and has been an officer for seven years.
