Portage Park couple takes `thrifting` to a new level

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Joe and Melissa Basilone know the value of used items, they own a thrift store, but this year they decided to try and learn the value of living used.

For 2013 the couple made a resolution to buy nothing new for the entire year.

Melissa Basilone

"We were talking about how hard it would be or easy it would be, or what the complications would be of only buying used, and we decided to challenge ourselves to do that to prove to people that you can buy used and have a very rich, happy life and to kinda prove to ourselves that we could do it as well, " Melissa Basilone said.

The resolution included a few exceptions, food, personal hygiene products, medicine and one gift for each of their boys, ages three and 8, on Christmas, but the couple held true to their vow.

Even when it was challenging.

Like on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

"We had challenges with major appliance breakdowns, our dishwasher broke a couple of months ago so we were without a dishwasher for a little while," Basilone said.

Melissa says a year of living thrifty has become a rewarding habit.

"Instead of just rushing out to the store and buying it there, I would have to actually say do I really need this and if I do can I get used somewhere else," Melissa said.

The Basilone's are glad 2013 is done. As for 2014, to just remember the lessons learned the previous year.
