Police: Teen Raped, Man Stabbed In South Philly After Parade

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Some of the New Year's Day celebrations turned violent in South Philadelphia. A 16-year-old girl told police she was raped, and there was a fight, as well.

As the Mummers partied into the night on Second Street Wednesday, police say witnesses heard screams coming from Second and Tree Streets, when they went to investigate they encounter a 16 yr old girl who told police she had been raped.

"This is ridiculous, you know what I mean? You hear guys having arguments and misunderstandings and everything, but nothing like that," Joe Rauch told FOX 29 News.

"That was very upsetting because I have a 13-year-old granddaughter," another neighbor said.

The victim told police a 19-year-old man from the neighborhood allegedly dragged her behind plastic tarps surrounding some scaffolding around 8:30 p.m. She told investigators she was sexually assaulted.

Police say alcohol may be involved. The 19-year-old was taken in for questioning. The incident is still under investigation.

"If they got him, they got him. Whatever he gets he deserves. Believe me," Rauch added.

"It's unfortunate," another neighbor told FOX 29. "I know drinking was involved, but you never know, you don't wish that on anyone, you know?"

South Detectives are also investigating a stabbing at this school yard just a few blocks away at Second and Mifflin. Police say a large fight broke out.

A 19-year-old man from outside the city said he was stabbed in the back after being surrounded by a group of men wearing red and silver dresses with their faces painted silver. The victim was raced to the hospital with a punctured lung.

"To me, it was very calm compared to recent, past years," Colleen Lord said, while she was sweeping up in front of her home on Mifflin.

While other neighbors complained openly about the partying and violence here, they would not go on camera.

Others said there was plenty of police presence here and the usual post Mummers parade celebrations.

"They (police) were all over the place. Good coverage last night, yeah," Rauch said.

"It's people that are not from the neighborhood," one woman said. "It's young kids, like 16 to 20, with their backpacks full of beer and whatever."

Police said they hoped to re-interview the 16-year-old girl later on Thursday.

The man who was stabbed remained hospitalized with a collapsed lung.
