"They should remember this: Vick was the mastermind behind his dogfighting operation. He bankrolled it, gave it a home base, encouraged it."

That is one of the paragraphs in New York Times sports writer Juliet Macur's opinion article on Michael Vick. Vick, who has had a disappointing season as an Eagles has an uncertain future with the team and in the NFL.

Macur pulls no punches and gets very vivid into the details of Vick's dogfighting operation.

"In the backyard of his Virginia home were mass graves of pit bulls that had fought for him or had been torn apart serving as bait dogs in practice sessions," she writes. "There was Georgia, a caramel-colored beauty who had all 42 of her teeth pried from her mouth so she wouldn't fight during forced breeding."

The bottom line, concludes Macur, is that even if Vick is a changed man, the Eagles should definitely replace him and set the bar higher.

The comments on the article are mainly critical of Macur.

Kingsley Clarke writes, "there is no relationship between athletics and morality. The athletes are 21st century gladiators selling Miller Lite, etc…"

Dave writes, "Why single out Vick? … The NFL, with its deteriorating sportsmanship…is no bastion of citizenship."

Deharr writes, "I think that you are saying here is that football teams should avoid hiring human beings. Because humans may have flaws and failings."

Skippy, though, agrees with writer Macur, "if the nfl wants a future, it should send a message that bad people have no place in the league. If you disagree, simply look at the photos of the dogs he tortured. It's despicable."
