Panera Bread Issues Apology To Two-Year-Old And Family

Posted: Updated:

It's a lesson we all learn at a very young age: how to say "I'm Sorry". And now, restaurant chain Panera Bread is apologizing to a toddler, in Savannah, Georgia.

The incident started when a worker at one of the restaurants asked the parents of a two-year-old girl, Emma, to remove her orthopedic shoes. The shoes were "squeaky", and bothering other customers. However, Emma needs these shoes to learn how to walk because of a developmental disorder.

The chain is now formally apologizing.

"I think this is something she (the employee) didn't quite know how to handle with having customers complain about it," said Catherine Duke, Emma's mother. "They want to help children with disabilities and this was just something that happened in their cafe and they are not proud of it."

The Dukes were Panera regulars until this all happened. The family has since accepted Panera Bread's apology and returned to eat at the franchise. The restaurant now wants to throw a fundraiser to help pay for Emma's medical bills. The company says all employees at the cafe where the incident occurred will be receiving updated and ongoing customer relations training.
